PSA: Beware of contract end dates & switch (at best) 2 months before end date

Last week I found the unassuming letter (see below) in our mailbox. It kindly reminded me that the Major Energy third-party electric supply contract I had entered into earlier this year was scheduled to end on 12/8. Helpful, but a bit late given that it we were in the same week. More importantly though, it notified me that I could expect a rate increase of close to 70% if I didn’t take further action.

This is how many of the third-party providers make money. They rely on customers being forgetful. If you miss out on shopping around in a timely fashion, you will end up in a much more expensive plan. (You can still switch out of it then any time.)

I strongly recommend to everyone to switch to another supplier (or even back to Eversource for that matter) two months prior to the contract date, leaving enough time for the new supplier to do all the back-end paperwork to serve you.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the amazing deals I found today:
