It's a Jolly Time of Year to Switch Your Electricity Provider

Get Ahead of Utilities' Rate Increases this Winter

As Eversource Connecticut customers your bill is going to go up yet again. The utility just got the green light to charge the average residential customer in Connecticut about $48 more from January through June 2024 compared to the current standard service rate.

While Eversource is eager to point out that this rate is substantially lower than last year’s winter rate, it also launched a campaign to educate customers on the savings potential of switching to a third-party electricity supplier.

“We want to make sure our customers know that lower energy supply prices are out there, and they can save money on their energy bill by shopping around. The sooner customers sign up, the sooner they can lock in lower rates, and they can avoid the price spike expected in January, so we’re encouraging customers to shop, sign up, and save.”

(Luckily for Eversource, they will still have you on the hook for delivery charges that pay for the grid infrastructure and ensure investor returns.)

How to Save Effortlessly on your Electric Bill

Here is the deal. Saving on your electricity bill has never been easier in Connecticut. EnergizeCT, an initiative backed by the State of Connecticut, lists all third-party provider’s generation prices, many of which are much cheaper than your default rate with Eversource. Also, there are no more cancellation or sign-up fees for these offers. So you can literally switch at any time in and out of these offers, and always fall back on Eversource’s standard service rate if you feel like paying more.

EnergizeCT’s One Drawback…

Assuming you have heard of EnergizeCT (which remarkably many folks haven’t), you still have to head over to the website, sort through the offers and then set yourself a reminder to come back and check out new offers that are regularly being added. Sounds like a bit too much work? Not sure if it is worth it after all?

… that Can’t Stop You

What if I could save you the hassle by sending you a brief email every other week (no inbox flooding) that summarizes the best offers out there?

Let’s take a look at the December prices as of December 1, 2023. They are sorted by total amount of savings for the average residential customer when comparing the offers to the standard service rate of Eversource.

Two things to keep in mind when scanning the list below: One, the calculations assume an average residential consumption of 750 KWh/month; please check the first page of your bill for your specific usage (see left column of this sample bill). Two, you can always switch from one offer to another at no cost, so a price may be valid for 11 months, but you can switch to a better offer anytime during the 11 months; keep your eyes peeled on the newsletters to spot new deals.
